Paraplegic, Amputee, Congenital disability or able-bodied?

Hereward Heat Wheelchair Basketball Club was founded in 1996 and is a registered charity. The club competes in the British Wheelchair Basketball national league, the league season runs from September to May.

The club is based in Cambridgeshire, training at Comberton Village College, which is located in the village of Comberton a few miles South West of Cambridge.

The club training night is on a Tuesday evening from 8.00 p.m. until 10.00 p.m. Home matches are played at Cambridge University Sports Centre on a Saturday.

Sponsorship opportunities

The club is desperately looking for a club sponsor. Due to multiple player retirements over the past 2 years, club income has seriously been reduced from player subscriptions. To keep the club operating we need to raise additional funds either through club sponsorship or through a club benefactor.

For a local business willing to support the club, sponsorship opportunities include club naming rights, kit branding, promotion of company products, use of club members at company promotion days and in publicity material and numerous other options which can be discussed. Company support of the club would also indicate to the general public that it was a caring member of the local community, willing to support those disadvantaged.

If your company is interested in discussing this further, please contact the club Secretary Steve Spilka, Tel: 01354 695560

The club is always seeking new members to join the club.  We are looking to recruit any athletes who have any lower limb disability. If you are an ampuitee or have a spinal injury, spina bifida, cerebral palsy or any other lower limb aquired or congenital lower limb disability, the sport could be for you.

Athletes who are no longer able to run, pivot or jump at a speed and with the control, safety, stability and endurance of an able bodied player are also eligible to play. If you have hip, knee or ancle damage that prevents you from undertaking these fundamental actions, why not try the sport from a sitting position?  This category of normally ambulant player may qualify as having a lower limb minimal disability.

In domestic league competition players may also be able bodied. Clubs are permitted to play one able bodied player on court at any time.

Ideally we would like athletes who have some general sporting ability and a willingness to learn.  New or novice players are most welcome and coaching will be provided by a fully qualified coach.  If you are interested, just turn up at our training session or give our Secretary a ring for more details.  The club trains on Tuesday evenings from 8.00 p.m. until 10.00 p.m. at Comberton Village College.  The club has a number of club sports wheelchairs that can be made available to new members to try the game in.

March 2017 - The club has recently been notified that it has been awarded a grant to continue to provide sporting opportunities for people with a lower limb disability through the provision of regular fitness and skill training. The grant was awarded from the Comic Relief Local Communities Fund, managed by Cambridgeshire Community Foundation.

The award has provided a lifeline for the club as it has had major difficulty trying to find funding sources to enable it to maintain its weekly player training programme at Comberton Village College.

October 2017 - The club has just been awarded a Magic Little Grant from the partnership between Localgiving and the Postcode Community Trust. The Postcode Community Trust is a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of the People's Postcode Lottery.
Our project received £500 from the Trust for the hire of indoor sporting facilities to enable the club to organise weekly 2 hour wheelchair and ball skill sessions for new and existing disabled members.PRESS RELEASE
